Huang Ruo CD just released by Naxos

Naxos released Huang Ruo’s CD Drama Theater Nos. 2-4 / String Quartet No. 1, The 3 Tenses (with Future In Reverse), and my photo of Huang Ruo conducting FIRE at Greenwich Music Festival 2007 is on the front cover (and there’s a credit on the back–thanks, Naxos!).

Naxos says: This disc, also conducted by the composer, presents three of his Drama Theaters for various combinations of Eastern and Western instruments—including 18 beer bottles—the elusive subtitle of each strikingly suggesting a musical/cultural/philosophical idea. Similarly, The Three Tenses explores a paradoxically integrated notion of time, where past, present and future create ‘a seamless entity called timelessness’. Huang Ruo won the 2008 International Composition Prize of the Luxembourg Society for Contemporary Music and has been cited by the New Yorker as ‘one of the most intriguing of the new crop of Asian-American composers.’

My photo of Keith Phares as Der Kaiser appeared in the magazine and online. The online review was topped by my photo of Peter Tantsits as Harlekin. Thanks to Opera News for giving credit for all photographs in the magazine, and online.
